I just found an article that describes how most lower leg injuries are not severe enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room. The article also states that the health of the person with the ankle sprain is not adversely affected by waiting a day and scheduling an appointment with their general practitioner.

Sprained ankles and lower leg injuries account for more than 30% of all ER visits and the majority of those injuries don’t require or benefit from the services an ER offers.
